“Doesn't Shopify work in Türkiye?” is a question we hear in almost every first meeting. The short answer: it does. You can open a Shopify store from Türkiye, sell in Turkish lira and ship your orders with local carriers. Some pieces, however, such as payments, shipping and e-invoicing, are set up differently from stores abroad.

Booster Wizard is an official Shopify Partner, and we build Shopify stores for brands that sell from Türkiye. In this article we go through, section by section, the decisions you need to make to fit a Shopify store to conditions in Türkiye.

Can You Open a Shopify Store from Türkiye?

Yes. You can sign up from Türkiye through Shopify's Turkish site, and the admin can be used in Turkish. Because hosting, the SSL certificate, security and platform updates are managed by Shopify, you do not need to rent a separate server. Plan fees vary by level and change over time, so we recommend checking current prices on shopify.com.

The real differences show up behind the scenes: Shopify's own payment solution is not offered in Türkiye, Turkish carriers and e-invoicing systems are connected through apps, and legal texts have to be prepared separately under Turkish law. We explain each of these below.

Payments: How Do You Get Paid Without Shopify Payments?

Shopify Payments is available in the 40 countries Shopify officially supports, and Türkiye is not on that list. This does not mean stores in Türkiye cannot accept card payments; payments are collected through third-party providers connected to Shopify. The main options for stores in Türkiye are:

  • iyzico: according to iyzico's own documentation, it can be found and added as a provider under Settings > Payments in the Shopify admin, and it is connected with API keys taken from the iyzico merchant panel.
  • PayTR: the Shopify app described on PayTR's developer site is also activated under Settings > Payments and can be tried in test mode before going live.
  • Cash on delivery and bank transfer: Shopify's manual payment methods include cash on delivery and bank transfer. With these methods the payment happens outside Shopify, so tracking collection is up to you.
  • PayPal: PayPal has not operated in Türkiye since June 2016, and its own Türkiye page states that users in Türkiye cannot send or receive money. It is therefore not currently an option for a store based in Türkiye.

Whichever provider you choose, get the commission rates, the time it takes for payments to reach your account and the contract terms directly from the provider. These terms vary by company and by the structure of your business.

Instalments and 3D Secure

In Türkiye, instalments are an option that influences the buying decision for many products. How instalments are shown at checkout, how many instalments are offered on which cards and who covers the instalment interest all depend on the provider and integration you use. The 3D Secure verification flow is also managed on the provider's side. We recommend pinning down these details with the provider before set-up and placing test orders with cards from different banks before going live.

One more detail: with some integrations, it matters which panel a refund is made from. PayTR's documentation, for example, recommends starting refunds from the refund button in Shopify so that they are reflected on the Shopify order. Making sure your accounting and customer service teams know this flow from the start avoids confusion.

Pricing in Turkish Lira and the Store Currency

The store currency is the unit your product prices, orders and reports are based on, and it is set under Settings > General > Store defaults in the Shopify admin. If you are going to sell in Türkiye, set it to Turkish lira at the very start of set-up. Changing the currency later affects pending payments, refunds, gift cards and payment provider settings, so it calls for extra checks.

After entering prices in lira, confirm with a test order that your payment provider collects payment in lira. If you are thinking of selling abroad, you should know this: on Shopify, showing prices and charging in local currencies is supported only with Shopify Payments or Adyen. Orders through other third-party providers are processed in the store's default currency, which in your case means lira. Market-specific price adjustments with Shopify Markets are still possible, however.

Shipping: Turkish Carriers and Shipping Rates

On Shopify, shipping settings are managed under Settings > Shipping and delivery. This is where you create shipping zones, groups of countries or regions to which the same rates apply. Flat rates can be set for each zone, and these rates can be made conditional on order value or weight. For example, to offer free shipping above a certain basket value, you simply add a rate priced at zero with a minimum order value condition.

Passing orders on to the carrier is done with apps. The Shopify App Store offers the following kinds of solutions for this:

  • Apps built for carriers such as Yurtiçi Kargo, Aras Kargo and MNG Kargo that create shipments and write the tracking number to the order.
  • Shipping integrator apps that let you work with several carriers from a single panel.
  • Solutions that support cash-on-delivery shipments and bulk label printing.
  • Notification features that send tracking information to customers by email or SMS.

Most of these apps need a contract with the carrier and the API or web service access the carrier opens for you. Before choosing an app, talk to your carrier branch and request the integration details. Compare the apps' features, prices and user reviews in their current form on the App Store as well.

E-Invoices and E-Archive Invoices: How Do They Connect to Shopify?

Businesses selling in Türkiye may need to issue e-invoices or e-archive invoices depending on their activities and legal status. Which obligation applies to you depends on the structure and activity of your business, so be sure to consult your financial advisor. This article is not tax or legal advice.

On the technical side, turning Shopify orders into invoices is handled by apps or custom integrations. The Shopify App Store has apps that work with integrators such as Uyumsoft and QNB eSolutions, letting you issue single or bulk invoices from orders and email them to customers. If there is no ready-made connection for your accounting software or ERP system, a custom integration that passes orders to those systems may need to be developed.

During set-up, make sure VAT rates are defined correctly on products, and decide how tax details will be collected from business customers and how invoices will be cancelled when an order is returned.

A Turkish Storefront and Legal Pages

You can set the store's default language to Turkish under Settings > Languages; the default language is used both in the theme and at checkout. If you will also sell abroad, you can add more languages and translate content manually or automatically with Shopify's Translate & Adapt app. Always check that the Turkish wording appears correctly and completely in theme texts, email notifications and checkout.

On Shopify, legal texts are added under Settings > Policies. Shopify's ready-made policy templates are offered only in certain languages, so you need to prepare the Turkish texts yourself. An online store selling in Türkiye usually has the following pages:

  • A KVKK (Turkish data protection law) privacy notice and privacy policy.
  • A distance selling contract and a pre-contract information form.
  • Return, exchange and right-of-withdrawal terms.
  • Shipping and delivery terms, along with company contact details.

The content of these texts should be specific to your business and prepared or reviewed by a legal advisor. We make sure these pages are visible and easy to reach in the store, while the legal content of the texts is the responsibility of you and your advisor.

Working Alongside Marketplaces

Many brands sell on marketplaces such as Trendyol, Hepsiburada and N11 alongside their Shopify store. The Shopify App Store has integration apps that sync products, stock and orders with these marketplaces. When choosing one, look carefully at which data is transferred in which direction, how stock updates are handled and what users say in reviews. If stock is not managed from a single source, problems such as the same item selling on two channels at once can arise.

When Do You Need a Custom Shopify App?

Ready-made apps meet the needs of most stores. In the following cases, however, a brand-specific Shopify app or integration may be the better choice:

  • There is no ready-made app for the ERP, accounting or warehouse management system you use.
  • You want to automate the order, invoice and shipping steps in a single flow.
  • You have B2B rules such as dealer-specific prices, account balances or approved orders.
  • You have a reporting or operational need that ready-made apps do not cover.

Because a custom app is a codebase that belongs to your business, it should be planned together with maintenance and updates. We recommend starting with ready-made solutions and moving to custom development when your needs genuinely diverge.

What Affects the Set-Up Time?

How long it takes to set up a Shopify store for Türkiye depends on the payment provider's application and approval process, the number of shipping and e-invoicing integrations, whether the legal texts are ready and how customised the design is. Starting external processes such as the payment provider application and the carrier contract in parallel with the design work shortens the overall time.

Mistakes to Avoid

These are the mistakes we come across most often in projects in Türkiye:

  • Taking the first orders without checking the store currency.
  • Not testing the instalment and 3D Secure flow with cards from different banks.
  • Copying legal texts from another site, or not adding them at all.
  • Leaving e-invoicing set-up until after launch and having to issue the first invoices by hand.
  • Managing marketplace and Shopify stock from different sources.
